A POLICE crackdown on motorists talking on their mobile phones caught one driver every six minutes recently. Newton Abbot police carried out a mobile phone stop check on the A380 Newton Abbot to Torquay road at the end of last month. An unmarked police car was used to spot drivers illegally using their mobiles while driving. The information was radioed through to colleagues waiting in the Aller lay-by. In a one-and-a-half period the police issued 15 fixed penalty tickets. Other drivers were stopped and issued verbal warnings for other dangerous activities, such as reading maps on steering wheels, using both hands to eat a packet of crisps and drinking cups of tea from a flask.
