The cold weather leading up to the Ashburton and District Garden Association's annual spring show on Saturday proved something of a challenge for growers with many flowers held back.

Social secretary, Ron Rolls, said those attending the show were treated to a 'brave' display, the exhibits of which were considered to be of a high standard by the judges. The entries for the domestic art class were well up in both numbers and quantity although the strong challenge wasn't good enough to unseat reigning kitchen champion, Margaret Stephens. The childrens' classes were well supported but again, the newcomers failed to dislodge last year's trophy winners, Charlotte Stead and Lucy West. Consistent senior trophy holder Dave Harvey had nothing to show this year allowing his brother, Mike, to take four wins and nephew, Kevin, his first win in the seniors.
