Newton Abbot Bowling Club opened for its 98th season on Saturday.

Ken Boobyer, who has been a stalwart to bowls locally and nationally for 70 years, performed the opening ceremony and bowled the first wood of the season.

He was watched by more than 70 members of the club, who went on to play a bowls drive, which was followed by a buffet tea and social get-together.

The club was pleased to welcome several new members to the event.
