DAWLISH marked Ukraine’s Independence Day last Wednesday with a simple ceremony at the Piazza.

Mayor, Cllr Lisa Mayne, said a few words of reflection, paying tribute to those people suffering wartime conditions.

The Ukraine flag was raised and Rev Dallas Ayling from the Church of St Gregory the Great said a prayer and gave a blessing on behalf of Churches Together.

Those in attendance included representatives of the town, district and county councils, a good number of locals and some Ukrainian nationals. Members of the Dawlish branch of the Royal British Legion also attended.

A highlight was a rendition of the Ukrainian national song ‘Little Red Viburnum’, sung by some Ukrainian guests currently staying in Dawlish, along with members of their host families.
