Roy White, of Naseby Drive, Heathfield, writes:
Under the headline Call to keep more daylight in the MDA of February 11, we are told that in this time of stringent austerity and the vain hope that the powers that be have finally realised that to prevent our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren having to pay for our profligate lifestyle we have to rein in our expenditure, this parliament, supported by our county council, is considering wasting large sums of money on a futile tampering with the hands of the clock.
This beggars belief. We shouldn't be surprised. Politicians as widely separated in influence and importance as Cllr Hook and Russian president Medvedev, seem to think that by altering the clock by an hour this will increase the time the sun stays above the horizon.
As my wife says: 'The sun rises and then eventually sets. it doesn't stop halfway and say Councillor Hook says he wants an extra hour of daylight, so I'll hang about here for an hour.'
Altering the clock does not, and cannot, change the length of daylight.
Politicians may think they are gods and love to pretend they can achieve things by tinkering and interfering with our daily lives, but they cannot and should not try. Even King Canute knew he would not stop the tide; perhaps Cllr Hook should adopt a similar humility.
Personally I would stop British Summer Time, which is a pointless exercise; Europe can do whatever it likes, as long as it does not cost us anything.
