STORES in Newton Abbot were hit by a power cut on Saturday morning as shoppers thronged the town centre.

Supplies were cut at 11.18am after accidental damage to a high voltage cable near Wolborough Barton.

In total 2,500 properties in the area were without power although, according to Western Power Distribution, 1,500 were back on line within a minute.
