WHO needs Phyllosan when you can join Stover Seniors at 60 and, 30 years later, still be playing competitive golf to a handicap? Charlie Short reached the age of 90 on May 20. His hobby, when not playing golf, is walking the course finding balls for the benefit of fellow seniors. Then there is John Mitchell, who was 90 earlier this year, and Paddy Pollock, a mere octogenarian. The current 'young' captain is Alan French, who is only in his 70s. The course set up for the Short and Matthews Cups proved a tough test, with only two competitors out of the 70 playing to their handicap. A presentation was made to Short for his past years of service on the committee, plus he must have found thousands of golf balls in his time. Short Cup – 18-hole stableford (70 entries): division one: 1 Martin Taylor (13 h'cap) 37pts (cup winner), 2 Alex Mair (17) 34, 3 Larry Birch (15) 33. There were two scores of 35 in this division. One competitor failed to sign the card, another failed to hand his in. Division two: 1 Roy Stephens (21 h'cap) 36pts, 2 Bill Milton (21), 35 (second on last nine holes), 3 Michael Geary (26) 35. John Matthews' Scratch Cup: 1 Peter Wright 25pts, 2 Ken Wheatley 24 (second on last nine holes) 3 Colin Jenkins 24. Charlie Short was hand to presented the trophies. Carding the only two of the day earned Gilbert Facey 45 golf balls.
