FOUR students from South Devon University Technical College (SDUTC) in Newton Abbot, part of Education South West, recently completed a transformative week long work experience programme with Network Rail and Great Western Railway (GWR).

Throughout the week the students visited high profile sites including Bristol Temple Meads station, the Dawlish and Teignmouth sea wall project, Laira Depot, the Pontsmill viaduct, and the Okehampton new station development.

Taking place this month, the programme built on the success of a previous placement in November and offered students an even deeper dive into the rail industry.

Each location provided a unique view of the engineering, logistics, and planning behind modern rail infrastructure.

Feedback from Daniel Parkes, principal portfolio manager at Network Rail, highlighted the students' enthusiasm and professionalism.

Daniel said: ‘From my perspective, I was really impressed with the engagement from the four students.

‘From the feedback we’ve received and my own conversations with them, it’s clear they had a great few days with us and gained vital experience in very different ways’.

These placements are a key part of South Devon UTC’s mission to equip students with the skills, confidence, and practical experience they need to succeed in engineering careers.

South Devon UTC looks forward to continuing its close relationship with Network Rail and other industry partners to ensure students are ready for the challenges and opportunities of future workforce demands.

Claire Plumb, Headteacher at South Devon UTC, said: ‘Our students were outstanding representatives of South Devon UTC, showing a real eagerness to learn and get involved.

‘Opportunities like this are invaluable, these aren’t just visits; they are stepping stones into the real-world careers our students aspire to’.

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, said: ‘This kind of industry engagement is exactly what UTCs are designed for.

‘Giving students the chance to experience professional environments and collaborate with sector leaders like Network Rail helps bridge the gap between education and employment.

‘We are incredibly proud of the students and grateful to all those who made this possible’.
