This was the sixth year that Newton Abbot Pacers have run a mixed basketball summer league and, based on previous formats, it was another great success.
Once individual applications had been received back in May, the players were divided into four teams – Blue, Green, Purple and Yellow.
It was hoped that the teams would be fairly even and this proved to be the case. After nine weeks of play, it could not have been closer, with two teams having won five games each and the other two winning four apiece.
The tenth and final week of competition was play-off time for the final positions.
In the first game of the evening, for third-fourth place, the score was close until the final quarter when the Green team pulled ahead to beat Yellows 59-46.
The final was also a close affair and, despite Blues winning their three encounters during previous weeks, it was the Purple team who managed to come out on top, 67-55, and be crowned 2010 Newton Abbot Basketball Summer League champions
'Forty men and women, have enjoyed playing in this year's summer league,' said a spokesman for Pacers.
'For some it was a chance to meet up with old friends, while for others it provided an opportunity to come and try the game or to return after a period of not playing.
'Whatever the reasons for playing, it appears, from the requests to "do it again next year", that this year's tournament was once again a great success.'
Details of next year's league will be published in February 2011, but anyone wishing to play basketball is welcome to go along and train with Newton Abbot Pacers.
Training starts in September: Tuesdays at 7.30pm (from September 7) for women and U18 girls; Wednesdays at 7pm (from September 1) for men and U18 boys; Thursdays 6pm-7.30pm (from September 9) for boys and girls in school Years 5-9.
All training takes place at Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot. Either turn up on the night or call the club chairman on 01626 203678 for more details.
