Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross has called on the government not to consider relaxing the Sunday trading laws, but instead reign in on the number of hours people should be expected to work. He presented a bill to the House of Commons this week and said Sundays should be protected as a time for families. 'I would like to see a return to the times when Sunday was something special, a time put aside to spend with family and friends, away from the everyday routine,' said Mr Younger-Ross. The MP claims to have received wide support for his campaign from groups including the Mothers' Union, the Association of Convenience Stores, the Keep Sunday Special group, shop workers' union USDAW and faith groups. He said that restricting Sunday hours would also protect smaller businesses who could not compete with large shopping malls.
