A TOWN councillor has criticised Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for buying two top of the range superbikes and a designer car to promote road safety when the public is being forced to cut back because of the financial climate.

The vehicles were purchased last year and Cllr David Elphick saw red when he spotted the feature on the service in Devon County Council's winter publication Devon Talk.

Producing a copy of the magazine at Monday's Bovey Tracey Town Council meeting, Cllr Elphick said it was unbelievable during the ongoing financial situation when councils were facing budget cuts.

'Surely they do not need to spend £100,000 on grand prix-type vehicles to teach road safety?
