One of Newton Abbot's principal GP clinics could be on the move after fresh designs for the old hospital site ruled out plans for a hotel.

Keyworker Homes (NW) Ltd, the firm behind the redevelopment of the 8.5 acre East Street site, had applied to build the commercial accommodation close to the site of the former outpatient department.

But managing director Ian Bailey confirmed this week ideas had changed following talks with Teignbridge Council planning officers and after being approached by Albany Surgery, whose GPs want new premises.

'We're geared up and ready to go. hopefully we're going to [Teignbridge Council planning] committee in December,' he said.

'We're really excited now. McCarthy and Stone are coming here with a 48-apartment retirement complex, we're planning a care home, 50-odd houses, retail, commercial space possibly for a vet's or dental practice and the doctor's surgery.
