A MASS swim off Teignmouth attracted 146 competitors from all over the country, and raised more than £18,000 for the Rowcroft Hospice.

They donned wetsuits, warmed up on the Den, swam a mile, and were rewarded with applause from large crowds on the prom and pier, and cups of hot soup at the finish.

Sponsored by Personal Travel Advisors, the Sea Swim South Devon was the first of its kind, and the organisers hailed it a big success.

'It was an incredible day. Conditions were perfect, and the brave swimmers have pledged to raise a staggering amount for the hospice,' said Rowcroft events fundraiser Laura Carus.

She thanked all those who helped to make the event possible, including Teignmouth RNLI, the local surf life saving club, Teignbridge Canoe Club, and Sea Sports South West.

'Their help was invaluable, and ensured every swimmer was kept safe and sound. Every penny raised will go directly to caring for those suffering from life threatening illnesses and need Rowcroft's support and care in south Devon.'

Although it was not a race, the fastest swimmer completed the course in just over 13 minutes.

It was so popular, it could now become an annual event.
