Mrs V JEFERIES, of Paynsford Mews, Newton Abbot, writes:

I refer to a letter in your paper with the heading Warding off the evil eye.

If Keith Sharp was touting for votes I'm sure he can now rely on at least 2,000 – that being the number of people arrested due to CCTV and the Nabs group in the last four years.

This is about 50 per camera so why he imagines one arrest per 1,000 cameras is beyond me; maybe in other places, but not in Newton Abbot.

If he is standing for Newton Abbot maybe he should take more notice of Newton Abbot, and not Germany.

Perhaps it's him who should get out more in Newton Abbot and take stock of what the people of Newton Abbot feel about CCTV.

What a short time a week is. Mr Hirst suggested a camera for Cricketfield car park. I'm sure this would have prevented a low-life snatching an elderly lady's handbag in that area on October 24. CCTV operators were monitoring the offending man until he went off camera into Cricketfield car park.

I only hope that the people of Newton Abbot who obey the law will ensure Mr Sharp never gets elected.

Perhaps he should have a chat with the husband of the elderly lady whose handbag was snatched who, at 82, maybe should not be expected to have to give chase to a 20-year-old man.
