EAST meets west this month when an exhibition of Japanese art and culture comes to the Riverside Mill gallery in Bovey Tracey.
The exhibition – titled Made in Japan – showcases works by four distinguished ceramicists and is hosted by the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.
Visitors to the exhibition, which runs from today until Sunday, September 18, will get the chance to immerse themselves in all things oriental.
The four artists have produced a range of work which perfectly illustrates a variety of Japanese traditions. They have partly drawn inspiration for their work from seeing the variety of British ceramics on previous visits to the UK.
Their work is mainly for domestic use and embraces a range of styles, from earthy wood-fired pots to pieces for flowers and tea ceremonies.
Talking of which, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in that famous Japanese cultural event – the traditional tea ceremony.
These are being held tomorrow between 2pm and 4pm. Each ceremony takes half an hour and will demonstrate respect through grace and good etiquette. The teas are free and spaces limited, so book today if possible.
On Sunday there’s a chance to have a go at decorating, throwing and handbuilding with the potters themselves at the Kigbeare Studios and Gallery in Okehampton.
And to kick off the Far East event – which has links to the Nourish food festival the town is also hosting tomorrow – a concert of Japanese music was held last evening at the Bovey Tracey arts centre by the Aeolian Trio, after which people attended a free viewing of the exhibits.
