An Ashburton man has claimed staff at Newton Abbot Recycling Centre 'taunted' and 'leered' at him when he visited the site on Tuesday to drop off masonry.

But Devon County Council said a man allegedly became abusive and was asked to leave.

Andrew Thompstone said trouble began when he went to drop off broken up rubble from his home.

On arrival he says he was told to pay £30 for disposal of the bags of rubble.

'In my opinion its really ad hoc. the bags aren't weighed and there seems to be no standard charge,' said Mr Thompstone.

As he had only half filled the bags, so he could lift them, he did not think it fair to pay the full charge, offered to pay £20 and the altercation with the staff began.
