A handful of flint fragments have revealed the 10,000-year-old mysteries of a Dartmoor valley.

For three days last week archaeologists from Channel Fours Time Team probed the muddy floor of Tottiford Reservoir, Hennock.

They were examining prehistoric stones discovered last autumn when the water was drained for maintenance.

Their full findings, and how the picture of a long-lost civilisation was pieced together, will be shown on the nations television screens next year.

But our unique behind-the-scenes access means we can share many of the secrets now.

When we joined the team for their last day on Thursday morning much had already been discovered.

Excavations had revealed that the valley, flooded in 1861 to provide drinking water for Torquay, had once had two streams running through it.
