TEIGNMOUTH’S new ‘pay to pee’ toilets have come under fire after reports an elderly woman became trapped in a disabled cubicle.
The town council, which operates the toilets, is investigating what happened and has put in extra signage after the incident.
It was reported that a 97-year-old woman had become distressed when she was trapped inside one of the disabled cubicles and was unable to get the door open.
A relative was with her and tried to open it from the outside but was unsuccessful.
Several passersby also stepped in to try to help.
They even used a screwdriver on the outside lock but the door would not open.
Eventually, the woman was freed after two men were able to release a catch at the top.
She was said to be shaken but otherwise fine.
A town council spokesman said: ‘We have been informed about the situation concerning the toilets and have already spoken to a witness to gather more information.
‘We are currently reviewing the CCTV footage to gain a clearer understanding of the events.
‘Also, the secondary locks have been taken off the accessible cubicles and we have also added some extra signage to assist users as the doors slide rather than open out.’
