HOSPITAL LAUNDRY

Ref: the Royal Western Counties Hospital Group Management Committee.

Dear Sir:  My wife’s heart, along with those of other ladies’ in the ward, bled for the blow to their pride in the exceptionally high standards suffered by the Sisters and nurses, when all their linen and immaculate bedspreads, all of one colour, which added so much to the general appearance of the ward, were sent to be washed, only for a motley collection in various stages of disrepair, the property of other hospitals in the Group, to be returned in their stead. Those of Teignmouth were, as I saw myself, all plainly marked.

MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK

The Teignmouth Hotels and Caterers’ Association and Chamber of Commerce have had a joint meeting with Mr Robin Maxwell-Hyslop, MP,  putting up constructive proposals for a solution to the town’s parking problem, read out by Mr Peter Austen.

One brought up what has been described as ‘Dowsing’s Folly’, the raising of The Den and making an underground car park there, but the engineering problem was that it would be below sea level.

The meeting was to discuss a move to build a multi-storey car park in the Brook Street area. Ground floor parking alone would be uneconomical, and BR would lose 60 spaces.

Once we have the motorway down to this area, we are going to be flooded with people. Brook Street will probably be unable to cope, so consideration must be given to further multi-storey parks. Mr Booth, chairman, added: ‘We can’t drift along until this town is blocked. We cannot do a “King Canute”. The cars will come, and something has got to be done about it.’

LAUGHTER IN COURT

Magistrates in Teignmouth Court last week heard a letter from a defendant in reply to a parking charge.

Mervyn Geidt of Starcross

The chairman commented: ‘I think that for a barrister it is a very fine effort. The fine will be the same - £3.’

UNUSUAL BIRDS

Wild Life Rescue Unit reports that some unusal birds have been found recently on Teignmouth’s beaches: the Great Skua (North Pole identity); Brent Goose (from Canada); and the Red Throated Diver (a winter visitor)
