RATE INCREASE
‘It is a matter of considerable concern to the Council that it has been found necessary to add to the extra burden imposed by the County Council, but Teignmouth is subject to some inflationary pressures,’ said the chairman Mr Arthur Bladon. He pointed out that it had only been possible to restrict the local increase to 4d by taking £17,000 from balances – ‘nothing short of a miracle’.
Some of the larger items were: Salaries and wage increases - £15,700: Rate rebates - £2,000. Major road improvements - £4,300: Toilets for handicapped people - £1,200.
DOGS PARADED IN MILITARY STYLE
Standing at attention to be judged, the dogs looked like a military procession, with their tails waving in rhythm and their ‘uniforms’ polished immaculately, not a hair out of place. The judge for Newton Abbot and South Devon Canine Society’s Show in the Carlton Theatre was Mr Joe Cartiledge. Every week he is officiating somewhere. Last month he was in Germany, and shortly he will be going to Rio de Janiero to judge the Brazilian Kennel Club Show. This year both he and Mr A H Westlake, president of the society, were judges at Crufts.
WISE WORDS
Diligence is the next best thing to having a Saturday afternoon off. The future is only the past again, entered through another gate.
DEBATING SOCIETY
Thirty five members of the Society travelled to Seale Hayne Agricultural College to debate the motion ‘Honesty is no policy’. In the flickering light of candles, Mr E R F Southgate, who proposed the motion, threw a sombre shadow on the honesty of humanity over history. Though he deplored the apparent lack of honesty in dealings between one person and another, particularly between politicians and peoples, those who stood by honesty as a policy were bound to fall victims to the prevailing deceits.
It was refreshing to hear two young speakers so stoutly defending the tenets of integrity, at a time when youth is so often attacked for its laissez faire attitude.
TROUT SUFFOCATED
Trout in a Dawlish stream were suffocated after chloride or a similar substance was put in the river by poachers. The magistrates were told that although the chloride affected the trouts’ gills, preventing the intake of oxygen, the fish were probably still edible.
The two farmers were found guilty after a hearing lasting over five hours, and were fined a total of £15 each, and ordered to share witness expenses of £8.78.
CHESS
Teignmouth Knights in their match with Torquay in the Torbay League again demonstrated their strength, especially on the top boards. Though short
of one player, which meant one game down before the clocks started ticking, the Knights won 3 1/2 points out of a possible six. Having won all their matches so far, with only the Rooks to play, the Knights are in a commanding position.
RIVIERA CINEMA
Paint Your Wagon, starring Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and Jean Seberg.
