Teignmouth Promenade parkrun has cited its 725 volunteers as the reason for its success.
Speaking at the end of National Volunteers Week, which ran from Monday June 2 to Sunday June 8, Teignmouth Promenade parkrun event director Paul Burgess said: ‘Our volunteers are amazing, inspirational and dedicated. Every single one of our 725 volunteers have contributed to make Teignmouth parkrun one of the most successful events in Teignmouth’.
Since the first event in October 2004, parkrun has become a global phenomenon with nine million registered runners worldwide.
Teignmouth Promenade parkrun launched in September 2019 and since then the event has attracted around 120,000 participants and spectators.
‘This has had a huge impact on impact on the health and wellbeing of people and the economic benefits of for Teignmouth have been substantial,’ Paul noted.
‘There is no doubt that the Teignmouth Promenade parkrun has helped to increase footfall and visitors to the town on Saturdays,’ agreed Teignmouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce chair Keith Underhill. ‘Many businesses, especially in hospitality, have welcomed the increased trade, and certain cafes have become recognised meeting hubs for post-race refreshments and de-briefs on how their run went, with new friends, runners and family. There is always a “buzz” in the air in town on a Saturday,’ he added.
Parkrun is a health and wellbeing charity. Its events are free and are open to anyone. Participants are welcome to walk or run the 5-kilometre course and parkrunners can push a pram, bring their dog on a short lead or take part with their family. Supporters are welcome to volunteer or simply to spectate or socialise.
