After successive victories against teams from Cornwall, it was no real surprise that Teignmouth should, on this occasion, return from the Duchy empty-handed.

First, St Austell had hammered the Teigns at Bitton Park in November and, second, they were hoping to clinch promotion with two games to spare.

However, up to half-time the visitors gave every indication that they could be party-poopers as their forwards gave the home pack a torrid time up front.

Although St Austell led 14-6 at the break, some of their supporters were muttering nervously about having to wait another week to begin their celebrations.

This was because on at least two occasions Teignmouth squandered good try-scoring opportunities – in recent weeks the backs have been clinical with their finishing, but this time their decision-making was muddled and the chance to put the Saints under real pressure evaporated.

The Teigns had, instead, to be satisfied with two Matt Moses penalties as the home side notched two tries against the run of play.

The second half was a different story.

Clearly St Austell's team talk had concentrated on not wasting the chance to sew up promotion on home soil, as they racked up the points with four more tries, including a hat-trick from Paul Winterbottom. The Teigns, meanwhile, failed to trouble the scorer.

A phone call to Crediton brought news of a defeat for third-placed Hayle, which signalled the start of celebrations which doubtless went on long into the Cornish night.

'However, it is to be hoped that the Teigns' players will remember how only last year they did the double over the Saints, and that a season is a long time at this level of rugby,' said a spokesman for the club.

'Now that safety from relegation has been secured, perhaps it is not unreasonable to dream of a promotion campaign next season?

'As St Austell and Bideford now battle it out for the league title, the consistency of their performances over the season should be a lesson for teams like Teignmouth to aspire to.
