NEW safety measures introduced to cover the 54th annual Ten Tors Expedition on Dartmoor at the weekend, proved a success.
The challenge, which began at Okehampton Camp, the start and finishing point, at 7am on Saturday involved around 2,250 youngsters in teams of six tackling 35, 45 and 55-mile treks.
Routes were changed to do away with several river crossings, there was less walking on busy roads and safety control points were moved closer to road heads rather than situated at checkpoints on top of tors.
Safety was further underpinned by the Army's contingency planning, which was supported by a new 'profession grade' control system, which tracked the youngsters as they battled across the rugged terrain.
