A KINGSTEIGNTON man has almost doubled his fundraising target after completing a 155-mile hike in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Rob Bray, 59, tackled the challenge of the Pennine Way, braving gruelling conditions, and completing the route in 10 days.

He smashed his target of £2,000 by raising more than £3,800, it has just been announced.

He said: ‘The reason for my walk was that this awful and cruel disease frightens me.

‘I worry for my family’s future should myself or one of my family or friends develop it, and this about how we would cope.

‘I hope that the money raised through my walk will go a little way to help find a cure or at least to educate and train people how to look after anyone who may develop dementia to make their lives as normal and as comfortable as possible, whether it be in a nursing home or their own home.

‘I was really please to have raised more than £3,800 with the help of all the caring people that sponsored me.’

Dania Shaw, community fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society in Devon, said: ‘We are extremely grateful to Rob for completing this amazing challenge, and all the time and energy he put into fundraising for Alzheimer’s Society.

‘As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like Rob to help us support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.’

There are currently more than 13,000 people with dementia living in Devon. With the right support people can live well with the condition for a number of years.
