A NUMBER of repair cafés across the country are expected to take part in this year’s BIG FIX, including several in Teignbridge.

The BIG FIX runs during the month of May.

Over the coming weeks, skilled tinkerers will strive to fix as many broken things as possible.

They will use their skills to breathe new life into broken items, such as electrical equipment, garden equipment, clothing, jewellery and clocks – and much, much, more.

Originally conceived by Recycle Devon, a partnership of Devon’s councils, this annual event has expanded over the years.

What started as a one-day event in Devon expanded to one weekend and now takes place throughout May to enable as many Repair Cafés as possible to take part.

This year will be the fifth year the BIG FIX has ‘gone national’.

Since 2019 almost 10,000 items have been repaired at BIG FIX events.

By repairing old items, it saves people money and gives menders the chance to pass on valuable skills and tips to help visitors to fix their own items in the future.

Repair Cafés are increasing in popularity as people are becoming more budget and environmentally conscious.

Ashburton, Bovey Tracey and Chudleigh are but three of Teignbridge’s town’s that have a repair cafe.

They are organised and run by volunteers who offer their time and skills for free. It also gives people the chance to socialise over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Jennifer Cooper, Devon County Council’s Re-use Project Officer, said: ‘Collectively every day we throw away thousands of items which, if given a little attention, could be easily repaired. Repair Cafés are an ideal way to save money and reduce waste.

‘Visitors can take broken items to be fixed, learn tips and tricks from skilled menders on how to make future repairs themselves and it’s also a great place for people to meet and a chat.’
