SOUTH Devon band The Ohs have released their debut EP, The Revenge of Ellie Grizwold Black, marking a new milestone for the eclectic group whose origins lie in Torbay’s creative underground scene.

The record was produced with support from In A Spin Records and recorded at Sound Gallery Studios in Exeter, bringing a more polished studio approach to a band previously known for its DIY spirit and unpredictable live energy.

Frontman Steve Oram described the release as a personal achievement.

He said: ‘I have always been a keen vinyl fan, but I haven’t been a performer for most of my life, so this is a dream come true’.

Formed around Oram’s offbeat musical vision, The Ohs began as what has been described as a ‘musical collision’, blending spoken word influences with punk, folk and cabaret-style performance.

Early descriptions of the band have compared their sound to a mix of John Otway, Ian Dury and Pam Ayres.

The current lineup features Alan Haden on bass, Jay Brown on guitar and Jules Jones on percussion, all contributing backing vocals alongside their instrumental roles.

The group’s early history included rapid lineup changes, including the departure of their original guitarist just before their debut gig, but the band continued regardless, building a reputation for resilience and humour.

Their early recordings, including the album Hazardous Instrumentation, helped establish their reputation for lyrical playfulness and experimental arrangements, while live performances across South Devon pubs and venues built a loyal following.

The new EP follows a studio session in Exeter and represents the band’s first vinyl release.

It captures what fans have come to expect from The Ohs: a mix of chaos, charm and inventive songwriting.

The band will promote the release with a series of gigs across South Devon, with copies of the EP available at Phoenix Sounds in Newton Abbot.

A limited run of CDs is also expected to be released soon.
