POLICE have issued a security warning after a spate of attempted break-ins on the Buckland estate in Newton Abbot.
They say thieves have been targeting sheds and greenhouses on the estate over the last few days.
They believe the incidents may be linked to a series of ‘begging’ episodes in the town centre in the last month.
Intruders in the latest rush of crimes have struck in Drake Road, Sandringham Road, Howards Way and Margaret Gardens.
A police spokesman said this week: ‘Local residents have been made aware of males asking for money in the town centre by giving a sad story about needing money for travel, or that a girlfriend has kicked them out.’
He explained: ‘On occasions they have walked into residents’ property without being asked.
‘Due to the publicity around this they may now be targeting out of town properties.’
Officers are advising people to be on their guard and to be more security-conscious by locking doors, securing tools and equipment and reporting any suspicious activity.
Incidents or concerns can be reported to police on 101 or email [email protected]
If offenders are nearby they should call 999 for an immediate response.
