ROTARIAN Martin Smith reports that it is ‘Hotting up’ for the Rotary Firewalk 23, which is being held on Friday, April 14, at Buckland AFC.
Individuals and teams are signing up to fundraise for their favourite charity, school or social organisation.
So far nominated are – Rowcroft Hospice, Meadowside, Citizens Advice Teignbridge, HITS Foodbank, Friends of Glendinning, Children’s Hospice SW and Jay’s Aim.
Jay’s Aim came to the fore just last week – as the nominated charity for Dainton Golf Club Captain Rod Gorman’s year of fundraising.
Last week, a man suffered a cardiac arrest at the golf club. Golf manager Ben Gauntlett and events manager Emma Fuller quickly administered the club’s defibrillator, effectively saving his life – the attending paramedic said if they had not used the defibrillator, the patient would have likely died.
Jay’s Aim was established with the target of reducing the rate of sudden cardiac death amongst young people here in South-West England. https://www.jaysaim.co.uk
The British Heart Foundation estimates that 12 people below the age of 35 die every week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions, many of them with no prior symptoms.
Since 2018 Jay’s Aim has been on a mission to reduce this number by offering CPR training and supplying public assessable defibrillators.
Rotary are encourage any organisation that wishes to support a good cause to have a go at the Firewalk – contact Rotarians George and Jan Eamer via email at [email protected]
Martin was also happy to report that at the time of writing, just five of the available 200 slots have been taken up for the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test being held at Dainton Golf Club on Thursday, March 3.
This is another Rotary initiative to detect potential prostate cancer in men over 40 years – the number one cancer killer for men.
It’s a fact that one in eight men will suffer prostate cancer at some point in their life.
Rotary continues to make a difference in the community.
