Bovey Tracey residents opposed to the building of a supermarket in fields on the edge of town will have to wait to see what impact their petition has.

The objection has been signed by 34 people and sent to Teignbridge Council. However, as no planning application has yet been submitted, the authority is unable to do anything with it.

Next Tuesday, members attending the last full council of the year will be told of its existence and that it will be passed to the planning department manager should an application be received.

Bovey Tracey Town Council has been in discussion for several months with a firm representing Sainsbury's regarding land owned by the community off Le Molay Littry Way.

Public opposition has been vocal with fears centred on the likely impact on the high street and the loss of fields people hoped one day would provide the site for a community centre.

The town council has asked solicitors to see what powers it has which could lift the restrictions placed on the land when it was given to the town as part of a development deal.
