World Cup 1966 legend Sir Geoff Hurst honoured a Teignmouth youth football club during an England game at Wembley. Broadmeadow STFC picked up a prestigious award, and vice-chairman Matt Jacques declared: 'It doesn't get much better than that.' 'Meeting Sir Geoff was a real thrill for all of us, and England beat San Marino 5-0. The whole day will stay with us for the rest of our lives.' Sir Geoff said: 'Broadmeadow STFC embodies the spirit of a community football club. They faced several difficulties in the past but with the help and hard work of volunteers, staff and players have really bounced back to become the outstanding club they are today.' Club officials collected the FA Community Award for grassroots clubs at the Wembley Hilton, gaining the Chartered Standard Club of the Year. It was the perfect fillip for the club, which is now based at the new Michaels Field sports complex at Bishopsteignton, after being homeless for years when the Broadmeadow pitches were put out of bounds through contamination from an old land fill tip. Broadmeadow has 120 players and was founded 30 years ago. The club battled against adversity after losing the pitches 13 years ago, forcing officials and local community members to work hard, and raise thousands of pounds for relocation and keep the club alive. Now, the club continues to grow, increasing the number of players and qualified coaches year on year.? The club achieved Chartered Standard status in 2007. It has implemented several schemes including promoting the Respect code of conduct and in 2010 introducing a club guide for new and existing players, which includes what they could expect from the club as an organisation, but also what standards were expected from them. ?The club has recently introduced a young coaches scheme with five new coaches aged between 16 and 18, assisting current managers with coaching sessions. Two of these new coaches have recently completed the FA Level 1 Coaching award.? 'Everybody connected with the club is thrilled that we have been officially recognised like this. It makes all the hard work put in over the years, especially by chairman Ivor Watts, really worthwhile,' Mr Jacques said. 'It is a recognition of all the efforts by officers, parents, the youngsters and council and FA officials to ensure we kept going through the dark times, before we could relocate. 'It is going really well at Michaels Field, and we are attracting more new players.'? Founded in 2010, The FA Community Awards recognise and celebrate coaches, volunteers, clubs and leagues across England who dedicate their time to grassroots football in their local community.
