Tory hopeful Mel Stride has said he is optimistic of a win in Central Devon.

Speaking as the count appeared to be drawing towards an earlier than expected conclusion he said: 'I'm not pre-judging the outcome, that's for the electorate to decide,' he said.

'But it looks like we've done well.

I'm also immensely impressed with the way the count has been conducted so efficiently, I'm hoping we could be through by 3.30am.'
