NEWTON Abbot town Council has decided, as a one-off, that it will pay a contractor to cut the out-of-control grass verges in the town.

The finance and resources committee on Wednesday approved two cuts at a cost of £3,000, and during the winter will decide on a course of action for next year.

Councillors also agreed to lobby Devon County Council which has chopped the grass cutting in the county from six to four cuts annually and that is only on visibility splays and other areas where it could be a hazard to traffic.
