IT'S town versus village as Teignmouth councillors have unanimously supported a controversial project to convert a field into a sports complex at Bishopsteignton.

Teignbridge Council bought Michael's Field to provide badly needed football pitches and a pavilion for the successful and popular Broadmeadow junior football club.

Planning permission was given but some villagers complained they had not been properly consulted, and raised a 170-signature petition. Now the scheme is on hold while Teignbridge carries out further consultations.

Teignmouth Town Council entered the fray and said it was vital that the homeless football club had its own ground.

The mayor, Cllr Ian Parkes, who founded the under-11s 18 years ago, declared: 'Broadmeadow are wonderful ambassadors for the town and I would urge everybody to support them in their efforts to find a new base.
