THE brand new Riverside Community Centre in Bovey Tracey provided the backdrop to a giveaway of free trees and wildflower seeds last weekend.
On Saturday morning more than 120 saplings and 200 packs of seeds were handed out to residents as a way of greening up the parish.
Organised by the town council in conjunction with a grant from the Devon Wildlife Trust, the trees comprised native species of hawthorn, crab apple, hazel, alder and oak.
The trees will replace the great numbers of trees lost through ash dieback, and in keeping with the town council’s climate emergency policy, in its own way the event will have an impact on rising temperatures.
Organiser, Cllr Debbie Fletcher, said: ‘The trees we’ve given away today will equate to a net carbon saving of three tonnes of CO2 per year.’
Intended to last all morning, the giveaway was so popular they all went within a couple of hours. But there’s no need to be disappointed, the council is planning another giveaway on Saturday November 7.
