Abbotskerswell Cricket Club's new practice nets will be officially opened by former England player Marcus Trescothick.

The club has a thriving membership at all age levels, with the first team playing in the A Division of the Devon Cricket League.

In addition the club runs a second XI, a Sunday XI, a ladies' team and colts sides at U13 and U15 levels. A number of midweek and evening friendly matches are also played.

Next season, the club will also field an Under 17's side.

'With such a thriving membership, demand for the club's existing practice facilities was being greatly stretched,' said Abbots' treasurer Eric Cole.

'The committee took the decision to construct two new purpose-built practice nets. This coincided with the opportunity to obtain some additional land adjacent to the club's ground at Two Mile Oak.

'Club members have been working hard on this project over the last few months, and are proud that the building of the new nets has been completed.

'They have financed more than 85 per cent of the overall cost through funds that they have raised themselves, with the balance being funded through a number of small grants from local sources, such as Abbfest Charitable Trust, Abbotskerswell Recreation Association and Devon Community Foundation Grassroots Grants.'

The official opening ceremony takes place on Monday, August 10, after which Trescothick has agreed to let the Abbotskerswell players, including colts, seniors and ladies, bowl at him in the nets. This should at least ensure that the new facilities are well tested out.

There will be a raffle and a barbecue. The club bar will be open and teas and coffees will be available.

Trescothick is a patron of the Children's Hospice South West, and Abbotskerswell Cricket Club will be raising funds for them on the day.
