A GROUP of travellers, who set up home in a Newton Abbot park, have left the site, it has been confirmed.

Senior officers at Teignbridge Council were gearing up to turf the unwelcome bunch out of Sandringham Park by getting a court order.

But the convoy of caravans packed up and left the site on Wedneday, just hours before the council’s legal team were set to approach the courts.

A spokesman said: ‘We can conform that the travellers at Sandringham Park have now left this location.

‘Officers have visited the site to remove any rubbish left by the travellers.’

Several vehicles pitched up in the park last week just as another illegal encampment at Bakers Park dispersed.

The Bakers Park group broke a gate to get onto the playing fields, where they parked up to 20 caravans.

It is not yet known how much both clean-up operations have cost.
