RESIDENTS who are set to be stranded when major roadworks shuts down a busy Newton Abbot street could be thrown a life line.

Essential repair work is going to be carried out on Wolborough Street in mid-February, blocking off the road for a week.

The street, used by thousands of drivers a day, will be closed from Ogwell Cross Roundabout to the traffic lights near ASDA from February 12 until 19 on a 24-hour basis.

Homeowners living in roads off Wolborough Street won’t be able to access their cars or park outside their homes until the work is completed.

Devon County Council is on a mission to come up with a solution for the problem and wants to hear from residents in Pomeroy Road, Waltham Road, Linden Terrace, Steppes Meadow and Wolborough Street.

One idea being kicked about is to allow people to park in nearby car parks for the week free of charge.

A letter to residents reads: ‘Devon County Council is currently investigating the provision of temporary parking permits to allow residents to use the nearby Wolborough Way and Venture Court car parks at no additional cost for the duration of the works.

‘In order to fully investigate this and make sure necessary arrangements, we need to know how many permits are required.

‘We appreciate that not everyone will know their exact circumstances in advance, and we are only trying to obtain a general understanding of the demand.’

People are being asked to call the county council to provide details of how many permits each household needs and what time of day residents will need to park. The authority can be contacted on 0345 155 1004.
