Library goers in Shaldon face growing uncertainty after Devon County Council said it would give the community until next June to come up with ways to make the service viable – or lose it. The announcement was made this week when the council revealed the results of its lengthy consultation into the county's library service. The council's preference is to explore a replacement mobile service and plough any savings from the closure of the existing building into improving facilities elsewhere. One of those campaigning against closure, Cllr David Cox, said he was 'disappointed' with the outcome and called on the community to redouble its efforts before it was too late. 'We're going to have to think very seriously about the opportunities this ultimatum represents,' he said. 'One option is for the over 60s club to host the library, as that is in a purpose-built centre at the heart of the village. 'But one thing is clear. Nothing will save our library unless the people of Shaldon stand up and together really do something to make that happen.'
