Criminal damage was inflicted on Milber Junior School, Newton Abbot, during the half-term week. The school has recently suffered a spate of petty vandalism, and headteacher Katy Liley and neighbourhood beat manager PC Hess are anxious to stamp out this anti-social behaviour. The latest damage was to a double glazed fire door, and occurred between 5pm on May 26 and 8am on June 5. 'We have only recently been double-glazed, and it's made a lot of difference for the children,' said Miss Liley. 'The school no longer has old fashioned, draughty, rattling windows, but for the past month someone has been breaking them. This is a community building and it's disappointing when people compromise what we are able to deliver to the children. It's wrong to have to use school funds unnecessarily to make repairs.' Newton Abbot police will be stepping up patrols in the school area in an attempt to prevent any further vandalism. Miss Liley believes vandals are trying to break into the school as windows near the medical room and the ICT suite have been smashed. 'We do not have any drugs in school and all our rooms have an internal alarm system,' she said. Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information on the crime to phone PC Hess on 08452 777444, quoting crime number JNO 61697.
