VEHICLES of more than ten meters in length could carry on using Newton Abbot’s Queen Street as normal should councillors vote in favour of relaxing the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) that would prevent them from doing so as a part of an upcoming scheme.

A joint venture by Devon County Council (DCC) and Teignbridge District Council (TDC), the ‘pedestrain enhancement’ scheme set to ‘transform’ Newton Abbot would have seen vehicles exceeding ten meters in length barred from entering Queen Street via the Avenue.

But this may not be the case if councillors sitting on DCC’s Highways and Traffic Orders Committee (HATOC) vote in favour of relaxing TRO 6019 - the TRO that would, among other things, prohibit vehicles over ten meters from using Queen Street.

Councillors are to consider ‘the relaxation of the aforementioned traffic order to remove the prohibition and facilitate access of vehicles over 10m or 32’6”’ at a meeting on, Friday, February 16.

This recommendation to be consider by HATOC comes after several businesses, including Sports Direct and Poundland, expressed their concern over this element of the scheme, urging for further talks and consultation before the scheme gets underway.

Many businesses along Queen Street are serviced by vehicles of more than 10 meters in length.
