A TEIGNMOUTH gourmet caused a major fire alert in the town when he threw the bones of one of his speciality dishes on an open fire.

The gamey smell of the burning venison carcase wafted over the town centre and firefighters spent nearly two hours trying to track down the origin, after several members of the public rang 999 to raise the alarm.

The fire crews could find no obvious signs of a blaze, but could definitely sniff what seemed to be burning fat.
