SCARECROWS were everywhere in Shaldon for four days.

They could be spotted in gardens, rooftops, trees, in windows, on benches, and even in rowing boats on the river.

The scarecrow fest was the idea of the Shaldon Business Forum, not to scare the birds, but to attract visitors to the village.

And it worked, with people coming in to hunt the scarecrows. Maps of where to find them were available from Bradleys estate agents, and there were more than 50 creations.

A competition for the best and most original was open to residents, organisations, businesses and clubs, and the organisers were so impressed with the response, they plan to expand on it next year.

'We were overwhelmed with the response. We attracted more people into the village, and next year we are considering having a week-long event,' said Katherine Edwards, the business forum treasurer.

'It was a highly successful few days, and there was a real buzz of excitement around the village. Great imagination and skill was shown, and it was lovely to see so many smiling faces. We all had a great time.'

The competition was judged by the mayor of Teignmouth, Cllr David Cox, and the head of the local primary school, Frances Moule.

The winners were – 1 Sue Rendell and Marcia Smyth in Fore Street with the Librarian; 2 Eric Rowe, Fore Street with PC Gotcha; 3 Shaldon Olympics from the Miles family on Riverside.

Highly commended – businesses, Shaldon Coffee Rush, the Royal Cream Tea; organisations, Shaldon Over 60s Club, the OAPs, the pre-school, Class of 2011, and Mrs Nelson, Knitted Scarecrows.

The business forum thanks all those who took part and helped to make it such a success.
