SHALDON villagers have made little response to questions about the future of the library.
A couple of offers to volunteer, and some suggestions, have been received by the parish council after it put out a shout to see what villagers were prepared to do to save the long-standing facility, earmarked for closure by Devon County Council.
The library, which opens for two-and-a-half days a week, is one of 12 throughout Devon that could close as part of modernisation plans.
The money saved from closing the low-use libraries will be ploughed into extending facilities at bigger libraries, including Teignmouth and Newton Abbot.
Parish council chairman Cllr Mike Coley maintained that the authority should retain services for the community.
'We pay our rates to Devon County Council like everybody else and they should provide a service for that money.
'I do not want to see a dilution of services in Shaldon in any way,' he said.
But parish councillor Ron Evans said that closures were a problem for small communities.
'It is disappointing, but the usage of the library is low and that is why it is on the list for closure. It is the same for all local facilities; you either use it or lose it.
'All we can do is take our findings to the council and see what happens from there,' he said.
Devon county councillors agreed in January that there would be no action until a full consultation had taken place.
An action plan for that process was due to go before the executive meeting on Monday, but that has been put back until next month.
A spokesman for Devon County said: 'The report is being moved to the Executive meeting on April 11 to ensure we have allowed enough to time to consult with local members and to prepare a good consultation programme for the summer.'
