The first event of Warren ladies' centenary celebrations took place on Sunday, with a four-ball team event followed by a hog roast, writes Robin Goodey.Scoring was low, with the winning team of Sue Broderick, Pat Harker, John Harker and Simon Carr totallying 100 points.However, this was only good enough to win by a single shot from Simon Rogers, Will Thorne, Darren Burridge and Chris McGill, with Yvette Harker, Cavan Harker, Barry Pomeroy and Tony Sluman a further shot adrift – fine scoring all round.Warren Vets played their Ben Spring Medal on Tuesday last week, with Arnie Mitchell, firing a superb net 64 to win the both the trophy and division one, ahead of fellow Emerton Court players Colin Ofield and Mike Jolly. Second best score came from John Sampson with a net 65, who won division two by four shots from vets' secretary Norrie, and Trevor King. Ron Bates was the clear winner in the division three stableford.The Wednesday stableford saw the higher handicappers scoring the best.Derek Rawlings shot the lowest score of the day with an excellent 42 points to win division two by three shots from Simon Rogers, with Colin McLellan a further point adrift.Division one saw a three-way countback for the prizes, with Colin Papworth's back nine of 22 points holding off junior captain George Horsham and SDL player Steve Mayes, all with 37 points.Warren ladies played their stableford final on Thursday. Lady captain Gina Redman was the winner with a great score of 39 points, beating Pat Harker by two shots, with Ann Ward a further point back in third place.Warren's May Cup also supports RNLI, and £70 was raised for the charity.There was a tie at the top of the leaderboard on net 64, but it was Jason Rabbage who took the win over Stuart Gray, with Matt Commins continuing his exceptional recent form taking third place a shot back. Commins continues to lead the year-long Cock-of-the-Links, however. The Kerswill-Phillips Cup was held on bank holiday Monday. Scoring was superb, with 45 points needed just to make the top three!Sharing that score were runners-up Jackie Kerswill and her brother Mike Phillips – who donated the trophy two years ago – and third were Yvette and Cavan Harker. However, their scores were overshadowed by a fine 50-point haul from Sarah Thomas and Ben Harding, who have been the pair to beat in mixed events this year. Warren vets played an American Greensomes and, despite the wind, scoring was impressive. Peter Wood and Alan Hopkins took the win on countback over Derek Spicer and Colin Ofield, both recording 45 points.The vets then travelled to High Bullen for their away day, where the event was dominated by the 'super Seniors'.Vets' captain Tim Morgan partnered 80-year-old Robin Bruford-Davies to victory with 41 points, while runners-up, with 40, were Eric Tose and 85-year-old John Biggadike. It just goes to show that you're never too old for golf.However, the highlight on an enjoyable day in north Devon was a hole-in-one for Andy Gorman.Back at the club, bad weather meant that only a brave few ventured out in the stableford, with Dave Rookes leading home Colin McLellan, with 41 and 39 points respectively.Warren ladies were greeted by bright sunshine for their RNLI Medal. Sue Broderick made it two wins in a week as she beat Jan Foster on countback with 38 points, while Heather Petty, also in good recent form, was third, two points back.Paul Sumner and Simon Carr prevailed 3&2 against the father and son pairing of Mike and Mikey Penlington in the final of the Alan Hopkins Winter Knockout. Warren's Men's Invitation resulted in a comfortable victory for Dave Richards and his guest, R Flower with 45 points, three ahead of Barry Pomeroy and M Hawker, with John Pearce and A Pearce third.In the second round of the Palairet Trophy, Warren were up against Dinnaton at Thurlestone and, despite giving away plenty of shots in each game dominated four of the five matches to record a comfortable victory and progress into the next round against Okehampton.
