WEATHER chiefs have issued a ‘red’ alert for much of Teignbridge today as severe snow and wind batters the area.

Exeter-based Met Office are warning residents the fierce weather could cause widespread chaos and potential ‘danger to life.’

The emergency announcement has been put in place from 3pm today until 2am tomorrow morning.

A spokesman for the weather organisation said: ‘Heavy snow will be accompanied by very strong winds leading to severe drifting.

‘Some places could also see significant ice build-up due to freezing rain.’

The spokesman added: ‘Long delays and cancellations of public transport seems highly likely.

‘Some roads are likely to become blocked by deep snow, standing vehicles and passengers.’

Other potential issues including long interruptions to power supplies and damage to trees.

News of the ‘red warning’ came as railway bosses revealed some train services have been axed or altered.

Fewer CrossCountry services are being put on as severe weather strikes between Newton Abbot and Exeter St David’s.

A National Rail officer said commuters will be able to use their train tickets on Great Western Railway services between Exeter and Penzance.
