Denis A Lewis, of Broadway Road, Kingsteignton, writes:

There is much controversy about the decision not to proceed with building a cycleway between Newton Abbot and Teignmouth. One could perhaps be forgiven for thinking that cycling has only recently been invented.

Upon leaving school in the l950s I cycled to work as did most of my colleagues. The cycle shed at my place of employment was in fact larger than my current residence. Nobody dressed up in silly clothing. All that was needed was a pair of inexpensive cycle clips to protect one's trouser bottoms from entangling the chain.

Unlike today's culture, when on the open road you were expected to be responsible for your own safety. It now seems to be everyone else's.

When one pursues a hobby or recreation, there is usually money involved. Cycling these days is almost purely for recreation and is entriely free. Why, then, should noncycling taxpayers be expected to pay for cycle lanes, etc.

Cyclists frequently cause accidents and should be insured, like all other road users. If they were also licenced, the money could be spent on the cycleways which they all crave.

Extra funding could also be raised by fining irresponsible cyclists who risk the safety of pedestrians by riding on pavements.

Businesses selling bicycles and accessories should also be asked to contribute.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
