Newton Abbot Swimming Club travelled to Weston-super-Mare to compete in the second round of this year's National Swimming League (Division 2 West) and produced an outstanding team performance to win the gala by 20 points.

The Newton team performed consistently across all events and age groups, with Josie Miller opening the points scoring with a win in the opening event, the ladies' 100m IM.

There were further individual victories for Ryan Rogers in the U13 50m back and 50m free (both in personal best times), and Steph Keswick and Emma Silk (U11 50m free).

This excellent team effort was further demonstrated in the 16 relay races, as Newton finished in the top three in every event.

The U11s girls' medley team of Brogan Mace, Evie Bailey, Anya Bishop and Emma Silk came second, and went one better to win the freestyle, with Mace, Bishop and Silk being joined by Millie Price.

The girls' U13 free team (Nicole Wickens, Charlotte Wright, Chloe Kemp and Laura Shears) won their event, Shears' fingertip finish putting just .01 of a second between Newton Abbot and Clevedon.

There were second places for the U13 boys: (teams from Niall Grant, Tommy Whiting, Sebastian Vaughan Burleigh, Ryan Rogers, Guy Bennett) and U15 girls (Jess Shears, Louise McGowan, Sophie Irons, Emma Garrett) in both the medley and freestyle events.

The ladies' (Becky Cooper, Catherine Bellamy, Keswick, and Miller) and men's (Richard Glanville, Adam Boulton, Benjamin Jordan, and Jonathon Trist) open teams finished in their medley relays.

The final events of the gala, the six x 50m open freestyle relays, gave Newton's large band of supporters plenty to cheer about.

The ladies' team consisted of McGowan, Keswick, Miller, Cooper, Garrett and 13-year-old Laura Shears who brought victory home for Newton, again touching just .01 second ahead of Clevedon.

In the men's race, Clevedon and Newton were neck and neck for much of the race, with Clevedon coming out on top, ahead of the Newton team of Trist, Tom Burford, Jordan, R Glanville, Boulton and Adam Ryman.

Personal best times were achieved by Brogan Mace, Sam Booth, Anya Bishop Laura Shears, Becky Cooper and Evie Bailey, with Ed Glanville securing two good pbs in the boys' U15 100m free and 100m fly.

Also competing for Newton Abbot were Harrison Boult, Eric Perkin, Ben Gauntlett, Jack Beer, Lewis Hailstone and Gabriel Bailey.

Final gala points totals: Newton Abbot 222, Clevedon 202, Seagulls 195, Bristol Central 173, Torridgeside 129, Salisbury 127.

The win lifted Newton from 15th in the table to sixth, thus securing a place in the final, to be swum next month.
