A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a dog was rescued from a flat fire in Newton Abbot last night.

The woman, in her 60s, was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after the fire at a property on the A381 on Tuesday, September 2.

The woman remains in police custody at this time, the Mid-Devon Advertiser can confirm.

No one was injured and the property was made safe, a spokesperson for Devon & Cornwall Police said.

Crews from Newton Abbot Fire Station attended a report of a fire in a flat at around 8pm.

On arrival, crews entered wearing breathing apparatus, rescuing a female and a dog in the process.

The fire was then extinguished using a hose reel jet, with positive pressure ventilation used to clear the smoke.
