A group of intrepid local runners took on and conquered the Paris Marathon – raising thousands of pounds for regional charities.
The Newton Abbot section of the Women's Running Network, based in Kingsteignton, flew to the French capital earlier this month to be part of the 32,000 participating in the famous race.
Six of the woman were taking part in their very first marathon and many achieved personal best times.
'None of us had done the Paris one before and we all had a great time,' said Marika Dowse, who runs the local running club, which meets at Abbrook Park Sports and Social Club, Kingsteignton.
'Everyone finished the race so we all did really well - a lot of money was raised for local charities.
'As well as the runners, several supporters and family members also came, so it was a fun weekend. We also got the chance to have a good look around the city.'
The organisations that benefited from the women's efforts include; Hospice Care, Exeter Leukaemia Fund, Autism Speaks and KingsCare.
The group's success followed about six months of training - with members running twice during the week and also at weekends.
Despite all the hard graft many have already set their sights on future challenges including the Dublin Marathon in October and next year's London race.
'We're all a bit mad,' laughed Mrs Dowse.
The group meets on a Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6.50pm at Abbrook Park Sports and Social Club. Also on a Monday morning at 9.10am outside Kennford Post Office.
It covers all abilities from beginners through to marathon runners.
