Lisa Robillard Webb, of Fore Street Bovey Tracey, writes:

I have just read your article covering the district elections on May 13.

I felt that your coverage of the Labour Party's results was paltry and one-dimensional.

Deeper analysis of the situation would have revealed that we put forward candidates in areas where we rarely do. We wished to give Labour supporters a good candidate to vote for.

Our five candidates are at the heart of our communities, being involved with over 30 community organisations.

Often our supporters feel that their only option is to vote strategically for the Lib Dems but after last year's coalition many Labour voters were horrified. In fact, votes to Labour, particularly in Ashburton, Chudleigh, Teign Valley and the Bovey Ward, actually vastly exceeded our expectations and were respectful in their numbers. The votes we took may have played a role in deciding the final three in Bovey.

Parties that stand and fail to get a seat are still relevant as the number of votes they get can affect the battle between the dominant parties.

Long term, I do not accept that the Tories and Lib Dems will always remain prominent in this area. Lives are radically changing due to the cutbacks. More people may come to feel that Labour's focus 'for the many and not just the few' is relevant to their lives and area.

As I stood in the counting area awash with blue and yellow, I realised the sadness of a two-dimensional political presence. Isn't life and politics more vibrant with more dimensions and colours – giving everyone someone to represent them?

I would ask you to bring this vibrancy to your analysis. <MORE LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITIONbr>
